Ljungberg: European players 'interested' in MLS

Media_httpwebmlsnetcomimages20090330rdpmvs8tjpg_cdfhjdsideyhood

According to the Swede, players in Europe have increasingly talked about moving their careers to the United States. With Kasey Keller, Ljungberg, David Beckham, and Brian McBride all moving from England to the United States in recent years, a solid showing on Saturday could convince some of the current Blues to make the same decision.

Encouraging... but who wants the league they root for to be considered a dumping ground for washed-up EPL stars that can't hack it at the top level?

Down the Byline: Zoltan Hercegfalvi Signed

Word out of Hungary is that the Wizards' rumored new forward, Zoltán Hercegfalvi, has signed with the team. The only thing that Hercegfalvi is waiting on is his work permit and then the deal shall take effect. According to the Hungarian media, the deal is an 18 month long loan, taking him through the end of the 2010 season. The Wizards also apparently have the option to buy him once the load deal is up.

Let's hope this is a Michael Scott special: win, win, win. Win for the team (he scores goals). Win for the fans (we get to make ZOLTAN signs). I'm still trying to think of what the third win is....

Soccer By Ives: Sizing up the MLS Rookie Class

SBI Mid-Season All-Rookie XI

-------------------Chris Pontius-------Steve Zakuani-------------------

Rodney Wallace--------------------------------------------A.J. Delagarza

--------------------Sam Cronin------Nick Zimmerman------------------

Matt Besler------Omar Gonzalez----Darrius Barnes-----Kevin Alston

-------------------------------Stefan Frei---------------------------------

Yay for Matt Besler. Though, sadly, he doesn't really figure into Ives' Rookie of the Year Top 5. But, hey, we're taking all the positives we can right now, huh?

The thought of Beasley as a Wizard ... I just threw up a little in my mouth

DownTheByline today has a little MLS Allocation talk since the summer transfer window is about to open and the Kansas City Wizards could obviously use some help. There are rumors floating about that three relatively high-profile players (Danny Szetela, DeMarcus Beasley and Stern John) could be available in the transfer market. The Wizards are, by most accounts, fourth on that list after FC Dallas, D.C. United and Colorado.

I. Do. Not. Want. Beasley. He's a speed guy that's lost his speed. His touch is atrocious (see also his attempted trap in the Confederation's Cup against Brazil) and he didn't rate for Rangers last year at all.

Szetela is the only one I'm remotely interested in due to his youth and pedigree with Columbus. He currently is owned by Racing Santander in Spain, but is out of sorts with that club. But, I agree with DTB's assessment:

Honestly if this all holds true, I'm not overly interested in any of the 3, except maybe Szetela. The Wizards have already done plenty of work on the offense lately and neither Beasley or John would help enough to make them worth an allocation. I'd rather see the Wizards use their allocation on a defensive player.

Read more about the allocation here.

David Beckham's heel turn (via MatchfitUSA)

MLS Earthquakes Galaxy Soccer

From Match Fit USA:

"Pariah" is the word most often used in these situations, a clichéd term that nonetheless properly conveys the utter disdain with which the subject is held. To say that it applies to the English superstar is to state the obvious.

And yet, I feel it necessary.

David Beckham is the American soccer's newest pariah.

Maybe this will work out like when Hulk Hogan went heel with the NWO. Take the babyface vibe (in Becks case, the "Soccer Savior" tag) and turn it into a compelling storyline for a few years.

Or maybe it just ends when Becks signs up to play for Citeh in January.

Either way, it's been a pretty steep fall* from world's greatest player who inspired movies about Indian girls finding self-esteem to being labeled "pariah."

* At one point in my life, Beckham was my favorite player for my favorite team, so I'm a slippery-bit conflicted emotionally.

Well, that's one way to settle an argument with a teammate

From du Nord: Our friend Jeremy Olson aka DigitalGopher caught the Montreal Impact in full meltdown mode last Saturday night during a 3-0 loss to our Minnesota Thunder. You might find this hard to believe, but the Thunder scored on the corner kick right after this incident. (Hahahahaha) In the photo you see midfielder Sandro Grande (does anyone know if that translates as "huge idiot"?) choking team captain Mauro Biello, while goalkeeper Matt Jordan pretends an attempted murder is not taking place right in front of him. See this great 9 shot meltdown sequence starting here. And never miss out on the photos by Jeremy from this and many other games right here.

Carlos Teves joins Citeh because of the cash

carlitos

Carlos Tevez says he left Manchester United for football reasons. Believe him? The Republik of Mancunia took a look at how much "football" Carlitos might play this year.

Given that Manchester City haven’t reached a cup final since 1981, chances of Tevez playing in 51 games for City this season are slim to none.

But how many games did unhappy and disrespected Carlos Tevez play in last season?

Premiership minutes: 1667
Champions League minutes: 436
FA Cup minutes: 300
League Cup minutes: 509
Total minutes: 2912
Total appearances: 51

Tevez played in the equivalent of 32.4 matches for the full 90 minutes, 36.4 matches fo 80 minutes, or 41.6 matches for 70 minutes.

If Manchester City reach the finals of the FA and League Cups, Tevez still will not be able to play in more games for them next season than he did for us last.

To get a better grasp of just how much football Tevez will play in next season, let’s compare this with City’s star man, Robinho.
Premiership minutes: 2454
Champions League minutes: 0
FA Cup minutes: 0
League Cup minutes: 0
Total appearances: 30
